Lecture on December 8, 2016 at 4:00 pm in the MacMillan Education Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

This public lecture by Daria Keynan is being given in conjunction with the workshop “Cleaning and Conductivity: New Methods for Treating Paintings, Works on Paper and Textiles” at the Lunder Conservation Center. The workshop is full, but more information can be found by going to the AIC Courses website.

The lecture aims to give a brief summary of the workshop’s main subjects, by offering an introduction to the subject of pH and conductivity adjusted waters and the use of agarose gels in conservation.

The lecture will introduce the scientific principles involved, how to get the surface measurement needed in order to design the appropriate waters and how to interpret the measurement results. Case studies will be used in order to illustrate how using these materials and adjusting them, to the needs of a work to be treated, can provide a controlled and targeted cleaning system.

About the lecturer:

Daria Keynan is a paper conservator working in private practice in NYC. Her studio Daria K. Conservation, LLC specializes in modern and contemporary art on paper. Daria was first introduced to the basics of pH and conductivity adjusted aqueous solutions in a 2009 workshop and has been making active use of this aqueous system in treatment since 2011. She has taught workshops on the use of the system in paper conservation and has trained a number of conservators in its uses.
