The 2013 WCG Angels project took place in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, May 18th from 9:00am to 3:30pm. WCG teamed up with collections and registrar volunteers from the Reinforcement Crew of the American Association of Museums (AAM). At the James E. Lewis Museum of Art a re-housing project for hanging art was completed, while at the Lillie Carroll Jackson Museum an inventory and condition assessment project of the historic homes’ contents (object collection) was undertaken.
Both of these projects are located within the Murphy Fine Arts Center on the Morgan State campus.
At the James E. Lewis Museum of Art 110 works on paper (watercolor, charcoal, pastel, ink, pencil, woodblock print, acrylic paint, etc.) and one painting (oil on canvas) were rehoused. Some of the frames (or their glass) were broken; the condition of the artworks varied. The works were unframed, so that they could be temporarily stored in flat files at the museum. Condition notes on the works were added as time allowed.
A “thank you” reception on the dock in Fells Point was held from 4-6pm. This reception was sponsored by the Preservation Society of Fells Point as well as AAM and the WCG. Directions to the reception are below.
The WCG Angels Coordinator was Lisa Young, who coordinated WCG volunteers for both sites. WCG project leads for this site were Dawn Rogala (hanging works of art project) and Howard Wellman (objects project).
Thank you to everyone who participated in the annual Angels Day yesterday– it was a great day, and collaborating with the AAM Reinforcement crew was awesome. Some preliminary numbers: 100 works of art were unframed and rehoused; 150 objects were photo-documented; condition-assessed, and rehoused; 40+ books were rehoused in four flap enclosures; 500 negatives were rehoused; 200 photographs were rehoused. And that’s just a start!
