November Letter from the WCG President

Dear fellow members of WCG,

Like many, I had to cancel our already scaled down plans for Thanksgiving this year. Instead of an afternoon of turkey and board games with extended family and friends, we will stay within our Covid pod of immediate family only. It feels like One More Thing on top of the current political climate and concerns surrounding social justice.

Even so, I want to focus on the things we can be grateful for. Speaking for myself, I am grateful that my family has managed to stay healthy and that my daughter is coming home from college after finishing her first semester.

I am also thankful for the truly amazing people who make WCG such a success. If you haven’t already, you must check out our social media on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Our Social Media Team have been so creative with the way they use these platforms. And, starting this year, we will be posting our presentations on YouTube whenever possible.

Our new IDEA Committee has hit the ground running, brainstorming ideas for the future of WCG. And our Intern Coordinators are finding ways to connect our fledgling conservators despite the pandemic. We are in the midst of one of our best seasons in terms of our talks and discussions, with folks able to join us from around the world.

Something else we want to do this year, starting with our December meeting, is try to throw a little love to the folks who have been so supportive of WCG in the past. I’m talking about the companies who have consistently donated to make our 3-Ring a success and who have generously provided supplies for our outreach efforts. Like so many other businesses, this year has been hard on them as museums and other clients have had to scale back or even cancel projects. And with a virtual January meeting, we won’t be able to offer them to opportunity to meet with all of you.

The Board wanted to find a way to give a little back to these allies in our profession. We have offered our sponsors five minutes at the start of our meetings this year to use in whatever way they would like, whether to tell you about a new product or just to say hello. We aren’t asking for anything in return from them. This is just our way of saying thank you to them for so many years of support. Our first sponsor event will be University Products at the start of the November meeting, at 5:25 pm, right before the talk begins. Please do take the chance to listen and say hello.

I hope this week you all can find your own love and peace with the world and I look forward to seeing you all in December.
