The Naval History and Heritage Command’s (NHHC) Conservation Branch (COBRA) is seeking a conservator. The selected candidate will work in the Conservation Branch’s official Navy laboratory at the Collection Management Facility (CMF) in Richmond, Virginia, which houses a varied collection of material culture from the United States Navy. The selectee will work with four additional conservation staff, seven curatorial staff, and multiple contractors in a dynamic environment to support the conservation needs of multiple Navy collections and 10 Navy museums around the country. The selected candidate will also provide conservation services in support of the development and opening of the new National Museum of the United States Navy.

The position is listed as a GS-1015-9/11 Staff Curator (Museum Management), but it is a position for qualified degreed conservators with experience working in a professional conservation laboratory setting. This full-time, permanent position will be open to all U.S. Citizens and has a salary range of $59,510 – $93,599 per year. The position will only be advertised for seven (7) days with an opening date of appx. 5 May 2023. It will close appx. 12 May 2023. Duties:
  • At the GS-9 Level you will perform developmental duties, as assigned.
  • At the GS-11 (Full Performance Level) you will perform the duties below:
  • You will perform work conserving, preserving, storing, accounting for, shipping of historic properties in the Navy’s Heritage Asset collections
  • You will interact with the NHHC Enterprise conservators, museum curators, and exhibit specialists to identify special concerns or needs to ensure conserved artifacts are displayed properly to avoid damage.
  • You will perform a variety of routine and special technical duties in connection with the conservation, physical maintenance, preservation, and inventory of the collections.
  • You will serve as a subject matter expert for organic and inorganic artifacts in the collection
  • You will prepare reports, documenting the conditions of artifacts, treatment options, and methods of preservation/conservation.
  • You will use various methods to examine objects including non-destructive testing
  • You will adhere to the professional Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works
  • You will answer technical and general inquiries on historical properties in the collection undergoing conservation and preservation procedures.
  • You will participate outreach and in tours of the laboratory
  • You will prepare and deliver presentations and lectures on artifact conservation procedures
