Imaging and Conservation Technician, Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts

The Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia is seeking an Imaging and Conservation Technician.

Objective: 
The Technician is responsible for converting fragile and rare artifacts to digital format using a medium format digital camera, in addition to derivative file creation and color management. The Technician will also be trained in basic stabilization techniques and packing of archival materials as time allows.

Reports to: 
The Digital Imaging Manager. This position also works with the Director of Conservation, Photographer, Lab Operations Manager, Conservators, Registrar, and other staff members as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Properly handle fragile and rare artifacts
  • Support the preparation of materials for capture
  • Capture prints, photographs, letters, works on paper, bound objects, etc. with appropriate object level targets
  • Convert TIFF files to derivative file types like JPG, OCR, and PDF documents
  • Enter metadata when necessary
  • Perform basic stabilization of artifacts (surface cleaning, mold remediation, mending, etc.) as time and aptitude allow
  • May also assist Registrar

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications of the Digital Imaging Technician are:

  • Associate degree or higher education
  • 2+ years of experience with digital imaging hardware and software applications, including medium-format and DSLR cameras, flatbed scanning, image editing, and color management programs. Knowledge of Capture One software preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in hands-on work with archives, library, or museum collections
  • Familiarity with the Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative and other digital imaging standards is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work under deadlines in a production environment
  • Knowledge of basic preservation and handling techniques for rare and fragile items
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Clear written and oral communication skills

Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position. A generous benefits package that includes time-off, medical, dental and vision, FSA, and retirement matches are included.

Salary begins at $40,510.
