WCG January Meeting Digging for Information: Archaeological Conservation at Historic St. Mary’s City and Forays into Working with the Media with Stephanie Whitehead

Overview: Stephanie Whitehead is the archaeological conservator at Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC), a living history museum dedicated to the first capital of Maryland. She received her masters degree in conservation from Cardiff University in Cardiff, Wales. Ms. Whitehead is responsible for the conservation of artifacts in the museum’s collection. Current ongoing projects include preparing objects for the 2026 opening of HSMC’s new visitor center as well as treating artifacts from the 1634 St. Mary’s Fort site and from the 17th-century Calvert House site, home to the first Governor of Maryland. She oversees collection assessments and has been the project lead for several Institute of Museum and Library Services grant projects focused on preserving the site’s original material culture.
