Please join the Washington Conservation Guild on Thursday, November 7, 2013 for the second meeting of the 2013/14 season. Terry Drayman-Weisser will be giving a lecture “The Challenges of Preserving the Nimrud Ivories in Iraq”
Among the greatest treasures from the ancient Near East are the Neo-Assyrian Nimrud ivories in Iraq. Attempts to protect the ivories have sometimes led to the greatest challenges in their preservation. This talk will describe the condition of the ivories and past and present attempts to preserve them. The talk will include an update on the on-going collaborative work of the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage in Erbil, Iraq.
Time: Reception from 5:00-6:00pm, Lecture: 6:00-7:00pm, Museum visit 7:00 – 9:00pm (Attendees are invited to view the special exhibition, Egypt’s Mysterious Book of the Faiyum, with free admission that evening.)
Location: The Mount Vernon Place Parlor is at 5 West Mt. Vernon Place, Baltimore MD, one block north of Centre St. between Cathedral and Charles streets. The entrance is mid-block, on the south side of the park.
Parking: The closest lot is at the corner of Centre and Cathedral streets, across from the Walters Museum, a reduced rate is available with a stamp from the Museum’s Visitor Information Desk. Other lots, metered and free street parking is also available in the immediate neighborhood.
