WCG presents the SECOND Meeting of the 2014/2015 Season

for a presentation by Eric Breitung followed by a roundtable discussion:

EVALUATING STORAGE MATERIALS: ALTERNATIVES TO THE ODDY TEST
The Library of Congress uses the traditional metal coupon-based Oddy test to evaluate preservation materials and has begun developing a paper-based alternative that uses a Whatman No.1 cellulosic sensor to better relate test results to a paper-based collection.  Assessment of both the metal and paper sensors using multiple analytical techniques allows for a comparison of the two methods and their utility. Investigations of what the metal corrosion products and paper degradation products indicate about various preservation materials will also be discussed.

Eric Breitung, is a senior scientist at the Library of Congress and is focusing on understanding how best to preserve and care for digital media and information.  Eric is a PhD Chemist who worked for 10 years in the Polymer Materials Lab of General Electric’s R&D facility, and has spent a year at both the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s and Smithsonian Institution Freer Gallery’s science departments.

Enter the USHMM from either side of the building if before 5:30pm.
After 5:30pm enter on the Raoul Wallenberg (15th Street) side entrance.  The conservation staff will be inside to direct you downstairs to Classroom A.
Note that the museum exhibitions close at 5:30 pm.

Transportation: The museum is near the Smithsonian stop of the Orange and Blue Lines, take the Independence Ave, exit.
There is limited street parking available.
