“How Frames are Related to Paintings”

“How Frames are Related to Paintings”

The National Gallery of Art will be hosting a lecture presented by Timothy Newbery on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the East Building Large Auditorium.

Mr. Newbery is an advisor, designer and maker of new picture frames, as well as a conservator and dealer in antique frames. He is the author of Frames in the Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Italian Renaissance Frames (co-authored with George Bisacca and Laurence Kanter), and Frames and Framings: In the Ashmolean Museum.

In his talk Mr. Newbery will show nine frames from a recent survey of European frames from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He will discuss how the frames relate to the paintings as original framings and re-framings, how preferences and styles in framing change, and how to date frames.
